   PARISTRANSATLANTIC (FR) by Dan Warburton

   If you use that little “find it” search engine box thingy on the home page of this site and type in the word “austere” don’t be surprised if your computer crashes. Seems like it’s one of the words I end up using all over the place, far too often. Don’t think I haven’t tried scouting round thesauruses (thesauri?) for alternatives. Austere’s a cool adjective though, meaning abstinent (abstemious, ascetic, chaste, continent, economical, puritanical, refraining, self-denying, self-disciplined, sober, straight-laced, strict, subdued, unrelenting), grim (bald, bare, bare-bones, barren, bleak, clean, dour, plain, primitive, rustic, severe, simple, spare, Spartan, stark, subdued, unadorned, unembellished) and severe (ascetic, astringent, cold, earnest, exacting, forbidding, formal, grave, grim, hard, harsh, inexorable, inflexible, obdurate, rigid, rigorous, serious, sober, solemn, sombre, stern, stiff, strict, stringent, unfeeling, unrelenting.. thanks Mr Roget for all that), and, overused though it might be, it’s spot on to describe the music released on Ilios’s Antifrost label. Xabier Erkizia’s Entresol is a slab of vintage Antifrost user-unfriendly electronica, whose harshness often recalls the work his fellow Basque laptopper Mattin (yep, it’s a small world, and the two have performed and recorded together). Coming in a plain cover, uniformly dark grey except for the name and album title which are in light grey (the inside reverses the trend.. my copy came with a “Promotional Copy Not For Sale” stamped across the inner spine, as if anybody would ever feel like buying such an austere ­ there I go again ­ looking thing), its 39 minutes seriously challenge the label name: it’s ­5° here today with a dull, cold leaden shy and this music’s frostiness is absolutely perfect. Questions of temperature aside, it’s right in line with the Suffer / Enjoy aesthetic of the label. If you’re already familiar with other releases on Antifrost by Ilios, Mattin, Daniel Menche and especially the magnificent North & South Neutrino (Lasse Marhaug and Alan Courtis), you’ll know what to expect. If, however, you need some bright chirpy techno to accompany the alcohol-free party you’re throwing to celebrate your 17 year old sister’s passing her driving test, you’d better leave this one well alone. Pass the Brennevin, motherfucker.
2. .

   TOUCHING EXTREMES (IT)

   This is the debut of Basque sound/multimedia artist Erkizia, who works with sounds at the threshold of inaudibility for most of this CD, even if a violent discharge at the beginning of the second movement could cause a stroke to the fainted heart after the almost subsonic relaxation of the first part. “Entresol” creeps through holes, walls and pavements like electricity in your home’s wiring: sometimes you manage to perceive something through the ears, most times you just feel its invisible presence manifesting itself like passing breeze - or in form of ultrasonic waves that a bat or a dog could hear in full. The listener’s role in this case is defined by the efficacy of his/her body functions; of course, clear ears and total silence should be a must when approaching sonic materials standing between the mutism of sources and a nuclear catastrophe. Then you arrive to the last track, that sounds like a cross of field recordings and shortwave radio, and realize no word can do justice to this highly skilled work: again, silence should prevail.

   JADE (FR)

   Cet Entresol est un mensonge bien gard?; la r?alit? de la musique de cejeune basque qu’on a vu aux ctt?s de compatriotes de labels tels que Mattin, Ilios , tv Pow ou encore de camarades de finesse tel que Alejandra et Aeron,Eddie Prevost ou encore Josh Abrams? ; La r?alit? de sa musique, donc est detoute ?vidence intimement li?e ? la mer. Ainsi, Entre deux flux semblerait un titre plus appropri?. Les gr?sillements discrets qui sont ici mis enforme, (exception faite du d?chirement num?rique en phase 2), les petits appendices et stridulations d’ultra sons (Ryoji Ikeda, est-tu l?) qui?maillent la surface de cette composition horizontale rappellent ?trangement le mouvement r?gulier et lent du sac et ressac de la mer sur le sable. Un va et vient hypnotique, majestueux et r?gl? qui pr?dispose notre esprit ? une pleine et enti?re relaxation. Ce premier album, bien que minimaliste et exp?rimental, offre une belle carte postale sonore de ce que sont, de ce que peuvent ?tre les cttes ourl?es du Pays basque certaines nuits d’hiver.

   VITAL WEEKLY by Frans de Waard

   the debut album of Basque composer Xabier Erkizia, who has collaborated with people like fellow Basque Mattin,Eddie Prevost, Ilios, TV Pow and many more. Like the title suggests - Entresol meaning between two floors - this is music that is inbetween something, not focussing on one thing, but rather moves in between musics. This results into quite vague music, I think. Sometimes largely inaudible, but at other occassions it can burst out in quite a vicious way. These outbursts however are quite short. ‘Entresol III’ is the piece that is troughout audible with vague rumblings. Even after a couple of times listening to this, I don’t know wether I should think this music is just unfocussed and dull or that, on the other hand, it’s captivating. I haven’t made my mind up yet, and that in itself is rather an effort too.

   CHAIN DLK (IT)

   ……and being on Antifrost you can start guessing at how “Entresol” will (not) sound like. Erkizia explores the shadow line between complete silence and all-out noise, with radical and unnerving shifts from one to the other. Most of “Entresol” is made of hisses, electric vapours, sounds of non-places. Reaching a more organic and engaging synthesis in the third and final track, with a sort of subdued storm, “Entresol” is a risky work…..

   MRB/AMM por Miguel A. Garcia

   Hacia ya tiempo que rondaba por mi cabeza el hacer un analisis, un poco detallado, de este album.
   Ya desde un primer momento me atrajeron sus cuidados sonidos, caracterizados por un pulimiento y un brillo muy fuera de lo común. Pero su composición y su flujo tan complejo y repleto de minimos, minuciosos detalles, hacian que no me acercara hasta el con facilidad. Era obvio que era un album inmenso, pero tambien agreste.
   Pero, quizá tan solo por esa apariencia, esa superficie, tan atractiva, tan bien hecha, no pude evitar reescucharlo
   . Hasta que la lógica del flujo se revela, y los detalles no distraen, sino que forman parte de una riquisima estructura por la que solo hay que dejarse conducir.

   Partes:
   La primera se traza en base a particulas de ruido blanco (digo ruido blanco por cercania, pero el que suena es precioso y orgánico, repleto de matices, muy diferente del teorico) que se deslizan continuamente por todo el panorama estereo, con ocasionales apariciones de subgraves, apagados, sonando como el eco de algo muy lejano, y pequeñisimos glitches. La creación de un paisaje sonoro tan rico y “exquisito” en base a un elemento que habitualmente considerariamos deshecho (una acepción mas de ruido) solo puede hacer que nos replanteemos muchas preconcepciones. Especialmente logrado me parece el momento en el que el “ruido” desaparece y oimos, con gran nitidez, un limpio, limpisimo subgrave que aparece bajo la superficie (admito que en ese momento, al menos durante las primeras veces que lo oi, experimente una “apertura de oidos”). Las particulas de ruido blanco van ganando en intensidad y duración durante la segunda mitad del tema, hasta acercarse a casi un “drone” Francisco Lopeciano, pero siempre con una fuerza muy, muy controlada. Una evolución desde la particula hasta la continuidad, intuida.

   El segundo tema se abre con un glitch tremendamente hiriente, a un volumen muy superior respecto a todo los sonado antes. Hay que ser hijo de puta se podria pensar. Sin embargo, a pesar de su brutalidad (mas que nada por contexto) el sonido y su forma son preciosos e impecables, y lo que logra es que despertemos, marcando un punto y aparte. Nuevas particulas de un ruido blanco, diferente, quizás con un sabor mas electrónico, y aparición de frecuencias muy altas, puras y continuas, recordando a los TVPow, se van sucediendo. Si el tema anterior traia a mi memoria una cierta “poética de la mesa de mezclas”, la magia de lo analógico, ahora los timbres son mas directamente electronicos y cercanos al mundo digital.
   Cuando el trance sonoro ya esta conseguido hace la aparición un misterioso sonido, casi melodico/tonal, pero sin romper con las cualidades abstracto-electronicas del resto de sonidos, dando al tema una connotación mas emocional. Y que me encanta.
   El flujo de este tema, mi favorito, es inestable, en continua mutación, e inmensamente rico: los sonidos aparecen y desaparecen continuamente y se solapan formando ocultas melodias, hasta que de nuevo solo quedan intermitentes apariciones de ruido blanco, irregulares, como un humano queriendo evocar el sonido de las olas.

   El tercer tema nos trae a la realidad, empezando con la grabación de campo de un sonido aún suave, de lluvia o agua, y salpicaduras, como una suave transición del mundo de la irrealidad electronica a la realidad de nuestro entorno (¿existen diferencias en tanto que habitantes del universo sonoro?). De forma repentina pero suave crece la intensidad y aparecen sonidos de viento, cascadas de ruido blanco que de nuevo me recuerdan a agua y un raro bucle, repetitivo, como algo que percute en el liquido. Los sonidos van y vienen, hacen aparición, de forma muy sutil, sonoridades mas electricas (¿glitches? ¿interferencias de radio?), hasta que al final todo queda en una relativa calma en la que los mundos sonoros imaginarios real-electrónico se confunden en el elemento “ruido blanco”. Y de forma muy silenciosa, con chirridos en la lejania, el album termina.

   Reincido: la densidad de este album, por sus sonidos y asociaciones simbolicas, por sus muchisimas capas y por la cantidad de elementos, hace que no sea facil aprehenderlo. En su escucha mas superficial se puede disfrutar mucho, pero es tanto lo que contiene que ha de ser reoido, casi constantemente. En cada nueva escucha descubro nuevos elementos, nuevos significados. Contiene tantisimos lugares ocultos que no es de extrañar que su creador, tras muchos años en activo, haya decidido sacar sólo este album.

   MONDOSONORO por Francesc Feliu

   Aún habiendo otros trabajos que exploran los territorios del silencio, ninguno puede compararse al de Xabier Erkizia, en éste “Entresol”, palabra que si hemos de hacer caso de su traducción al catalán (quién sabe si esas eran sus intenciones) hace referencia a ese estar entremedio (en concreto entre un piso y el suelo) con que el de Bera expone sus ideas conceptuales.

   Términos como los intersticios sonoros y lo situado entre lo audible y lo no audible (entre el ser y el no-ser), quedan supeditados a un imperceptible ruido blanco, casi inaudible, con el cual construir sus tres radicales movimientos sonoros. Tres crípticas y frías piezas, caracterizadas más por sus carencias que por su acotada expresión, cuyas ganas de ponerselo difícil al oyente (requieren de cierta paciencia y el equipo apropiado a mano: inevitablemente se trata de un disco que debe ser escuchado con auriculares) pueden más que sus resultados. Ciertamente no se trata de música para consumir sino para aprehender y degustar. En todo su exceso.
